The Club originated in 1997 when it was
located in Woodend Village in Tamworth. Allan Ashford, the founder
member, and having 42 years experience of Judo, was asked by
people in the Village if he would start up a club. In its early
days the Club and it's members joined the Tokushima Judo
Association. Initially competing in approximately 3 competitions a
year including London venues. The growth of the Club across the
age ranges now involves further associations with the BJA, AJA and the
BJC which allows competitors of all ages increased opportunities to
compete.
The Club currently can has a World
Veteran Champion and a British Masters Champion and in the few years
it has been running, has had two members in the British Cadet Squad with
the BJA.
Some of our Instructors
compete both nationally and internationally and have represented Great
Britain at the highest level. Both Allan and Steve Ashford
participate in national coaching courses where they are known amongst
their peers for the knowledge and dedication to the sport (though they
won't want me saying this).
The Club is regularly attended by 70 plus
members and has 3 practice nights per
week based at John Wilmott Secondary School (Monday and Thursday) and
Wyndley Leisure Centre (Saturday).
